Sports & Jewish Values

I teach through the text that a person learns Torah from a place where their heart desires. For many of us, that place is on the field, court or with whenever we've got our running gear on. Athletics present an important opportunity for our Jewish values to come to life in real time through our interactions with others and how we design our own playbooks. Additionally, how we take care of our bodies, take advantage of our gifts and achieve goals through hard work and determination are areas to consider the intersections of our passion for playing and competing and who we are as Jewish athletes.
The Simpsons & Theology

Although humorous and often confrontational, The Simpsons frequently tackle a concept that is extremely hard to do in our society: religion. How can a cartoon be referred to as one of the most theologically relevant programs in prime time? Many of us find ourselves asking questions like “why do bad things happen to good people?” and “why should I believe in God?” Through the topics of prayer, morality, afterlife, God, and the Bible, we’ll take some time to dig beneath the laughter and jokes and journey together as we attempt to answer some of the harder questions the show brings up. And who knows…we might find that The Simpsons will lead us to discover that we all have a little Homer in us all.
Midrash Mash-Up: Exploring Jewish Text and History Through Music and Media

Our tradition teaches us that the world stands on three things – the Torah, the [Temple] service, and loving acts of kindness. (Pirke Avot 1:2) Through this course, students will have an opportunity to connect popular music to Jewish text and midrash, history and tradition. Through working in chevruta (, students will compare and contrast a wide variety of (musical) views in the areas of Torah, prayer, tikkun olam and Israel, and ultimately develop their own sense of what their lives are centered around.
