The Simpsons & Theology

Course Description

“Stealing!  How could you?  Haven’t you learned anything from that guy who gives those sermons at church?  Captain what’s-his-name?” ~ Homer Simpson

Although humorous and often confrontational, The Simpsons frequently tackle a concept that is extremely hard to do in our society: religion.  How can a cartoon be referred to as one of the most theologically relevant programs in prime time?  Many of us find ourselves asking questions like “why do bad things happen to good people?” and “why should I believe in God?”  Through the topics of prayer, morality, afterlife, God, and the Bible, we’ll take some time to dig beneath the laughter and jokes and journey together as we attempt to answer some of the harder questions the show brings up.  And who knows…we might find that The Simpsons will lead us to discover that we all have a little Homer in us all.
